West Africa’s democratic journey is at a crossroads. Once a beacon of progress, the region now faces shrinking civic freedoms, weakened institutions, and growing public distrust. Yet, citizens’ desire for democracy remains strong.
These challenges and opportunities were explored at the WACSI Policy Dialogue Series (WACPoDiS) on “Restoring and Safeguarding Democracy in West Africa through Inclusive, Transparent and Peaceful Elections.”
This op-ed discusses the risks and opportunities shaping the region’s democratic future, and how inclusive, transparent, and peaceful elections can help restore trust.
