[Dakar, Senegal, 14 June 2024]— In response to the dwindling financial resources that threaten the sustainability of civil society organisations (CSOs) across Senegal, the West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI) convened a pivotal workshop from June 11 to 13 2024 in the country’s capital Dakar to build the financial resilience of CSOs.
The training, focused on resource mobilisation and financial resilience, brought together representatives from seven Senegalese CSOs, equipping them with the skills necessary to navigate an increasingly challenging funding landscape.

Senegalese CSOs, like many across the region, are facing a critical funding crisis as traditional sources of support dry up, forcing them to explore new avenues for sustainability. The workshop, under the West Africa Civic Space Resouce Hub (CSR-HUB) project funded by the Ford Foundation, addressed this urgent need by providing participants with advanced training in fundraising, project proposal writing, and digital fundraising strategies.
Over the course of three days, participants engaged in intensive sessions designed to enhance their ability to secure funding for their organisations. The training covered the full spectrum of resource mobilisation, from analysing the financial environment to crafting persuasive project proposals and developing budgets. A particular emphasis was placed on mastering the art of donor engagement—learning how to appeal to potential funders by connecting with their values and priorities.
The interactive format of the workshop, which included group exercises and plenary discussions, allowed participants to practice these skills in real-time. They worked together to draft project proposals, develop budgets, and present their ideas to a mock panel of potential donors, receiving immediate feedback on their performance.
Participant feedback was overwhelmingly positive, underscoring the workshop’s relevance and impact.
Maguette Diarra, Resource Mobilization Officer at Citoyen Actif pour la Justice Sociale (CAJUS), highlighted how the training would strengthen her organisation’s future collaborations. “This training has greatly benefited us, especially in improving our project proposals and considering future partnerships that could help us achieve our strategic objectives,” Diarra remarked.
Cheikh Ndiaw, Monitoring and Evaluation Manager at Enfance et Paix, echoed this sentiment, noting the workshop’s comprehensive approach. “The training was excellent, covering topics like leadership, social capital creation, communication for resource mobilisation, and mobilisation strategy. It addressed many aspects that are crucial to our work but that we had previously only superficially addressed,” Ndiaw stated.

The success of the training highlights the vital role that WACSI and the Ford Foundation play in supporting civil society across West Africa under CSR-Hub project. By providing essential tools for resource mobilisation, these organisations are helping to build a more resilient and autonomous civil society sector, capable of effectively addressing local challenges with innovative solutions.
As Senegalese CSOs continue to navigate an uncertain financial future, the skills gained from this workshop will be crucial in ensuring their long-term viability.
The Dakar workshop not only enhanced participants’ technical skills but also boosted their confidence in their ability to secure the resources needed to sustain their work, marking a significant step towards a more financially resilient civil society in Senegal.
