[Abuja, 19 March 2024] A recent report titled “The Contribution of Civil Society Organisations to the Economic, Social, and Political Development of West Africa” has underscored the pivotal role played by Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in shaping the development landscape of the region. This report highlights the importance of CSOs in promoting policy and institutional reforms, facilitating inclusive processes, and fostering peace, stability, and economic development.
The West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI) is pleased to announce – a two-day regional workshop, themed “West Africa under ECOWAS Vision 2050 and the Role of Civil Society.” Scheduled to hold in Abuja, Nigeria, from 19 to 20 March 2024, the event aims to spark transformative discussions on the new ECOWAS Vision 2050 development agenda and the strategic role of civil society for effective implementation.
Launched in February 2021 after extensive consultations, ECOWAS Vision 2050 emerges as a transformative strategy poised to redefine the regional landscape, steering it towards economic prosperity and political prominence. The vision is anchored by five core pillars: peace, security, and stability; governance and the rule of law; economic integration and interconnectivity; transformation, inclusive and sustainable development; and social inclusion.
This regional workshop being supported by the Open Society Foundations (OSF-Africa) and Oxfam West Africa (Sahel Programme) will provide a platform for the ECOWAS Commission, specifically the Strategic Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation (SPME) directorate under the office of the Vice President to present the new Vision to over 50 civil society actors representing fifteen ECOWAS member states as well as facilitate insightful deliberations including clarifications from civil society perspectives.
The workshop would attract the participation of being attended by regional civil society groups, policymakers, representatives of ECOWAS, academics, development practitioners, INGOs, and other relevant stakeholders in West Africa.
Anticipated outcomes from the workshop include a deeper understanding of Vision 2050 by participants, enhanced civil society commitment and ownership of the vision, and the identification of strategic actions to increase civil society’s contributions to its implementation.
This regional workshop marks a renewed partnership and collaboration between WACSI and the Office of the Vice President of the Commission in the collective pursuit of the ‘ECOWAS of People’ through the effective popularisation and operationalisation of ECOWAS Vision 2050 among community citizens
WACSI is organising this workshop with the support of OSF-Africa, Oxfam West Africa and in partnership with the Office of the Vice President of ECOWAS
