[Lagos, 10 April 2024] – As civil society organisations (CSOs) across Nigeria face growing challenges in an increasingly complex operational landscape, strong leadership is becoming more critical than ever.
The West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI), under the Civic Space Resource Hub (CSR-Hub), recently hosted a Leadership and Organisational Governance Training in Lagos, aimed at equipping leaders with the skills needed to navigate these challenges effectively.
The three-day workshop, held from 8 – 10 April 2024, attracted board members, executive directors, and programme managers from CSOs nationwide. Participants were provided with tools to strengthen governance, improve decision-making, and build more sustainable organisations.
The training kicked off with an insightful keynote from organisational development expert, Robert Akoto, who highlighted the importance of vision and clarity in leadership.
“Effective leaders must be able to articulate a clear vision and ensure it aligns with their organisation’s goals,” he said.

His address set the tone for three days of intensive learning, as participants engaged in discussions around governance structures, risk management, ethical decision-making, and succession planning.
A standout session on ethical leadership particularly resonated with attendees. Iwalola Akin Jimoh, a board member of Development Communications Network, noted the impact of this session: “It made me rethink how we make decisions in our organisation. It’s about ensuring that we balance productivity with ethical responsibility.”
The training incorporated real-world case studies, practical exercises, and peer-to-peer learning opportunities. According to Joshua Y. Jatau, Executive Director of Novel Alliance for Development, the networking aspect of the workshop was invaluable: “Sharing experiences with my peers gave me new ideas that I can immediately apply in my organisation.”

WACSI’s 2023 Civil Society Sustainability Report emphasises the growing importance of institutional strengthening for CSOs in West Africa, particularly as donor funding continues to shrink. The report highlights that organisations with strong governance frameworks are more resilient in the face of these challenges, a point reinforced throughout the training.
In a panel discussion featuring experienced leaders from various sectors, the importance of transparent, inclusive leadership was underscored. “Leadership isn’t just about making decisions; it’s about creating an environment where everyone feels empowered to contribute,” said Ms. Bunmi Dipo-Salami, Executive Director of Baobab for Women’s Human Rights.

Feedback from participants reflected the high value of the training, with many calling for follow-up sessions and ongoing support in applying governance principles within their organisations. “This workshop has given me practical tools to lead more effectively and ensure our organisation operates with integrity,” said Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, Executive Director of the Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy, and Development (FENRAD).
WACSI, in partnership with CSR-Hub, plans to continue providing leadership and governance training for CSOs across West Africa, with the aim of fostering stronger, more sustainable organisations. According to Ms. Omolara Balogun, Head of Policy Influencing and Advocacy at WACSI, “Strong leadership is essential to the sustainability and impact of civil society. We are committed to building a community of leaders dedicated to ethical governance and excellence.”
This leadership training is part of WACSI’s broader mission to empower civil society in West Africa, ensuring that organisations are equipped not just to survive, but to thrive and continue their critical work in the region.
