[Tamale, Ghana—5 June 2025] From 3–5 June 2025, the Civic Space Resource Hub (CSR-Hub) convened twenty dynamic civil society organisations (CSOs) from across Ghana in Tamale for a three-day leadership development training. The workshop, organised by the West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI), formed part of CSR-Hub’s commitment to building resilient civic institutions through its second thematic pillar — Leadership and Organisational Governance.
Rooted in the broader vision of promoting democratic development and safeguarding civic space, the training equipped participants with tools to lead more effectively in increasingly complex and constrained environments.
“Leadership starts with leading yourself authentically. If you can’t lead yourself well, it becomes difficult to lead others or an organisation,”
— Robert Amoafo Akoto, Lead Facilitator and Leadership Coach, Busara Africa

A Deep Dive into Leadership Development
Day one set the stage with discussions on the evolving nature of civic leadership, ethical leadership principles, and the critical competencies needed to navigate today’s civic challenges. Participants engaged in sessions on “Leading Self” and “Leading Others”, exploring emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and leadership authenticity.
Over the three days, participants explored the individual, interpersonal, and organisational dimensions of leadership. The second day focused on team leadership and institutional culture — addressing internal conflicts, conducting difficult conversations, and leading with empathy.
“Managing conflict is one of our biggest challenges in the field. The practical tools shared here will greatly improve how I navigate difficult team conversations,”
— Abdul Rafiiu Alhassan, Executive Director, Girls Empowerment Mission Ghana
On the final day, the spotlight shifted to organisational governance, including succession planning, staff wellbeing, board engagement, and sustainability. Participants developed action plans to align leadership transitions with long-term institutional vision and resilience.
A Space for Reflection and Commitment
Beyond the training content, the workshop provided a safe and inclusive space for CSOs to reflect, connect, and share experiences. During the closing session, WACSI’s representative, Vanessa Agyei-Essiful, reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to sustained leadership development.
“We believe that resilient organisations begin with grounded leaders. This training is a step towards nurturing the leadership capacities needed to safeguard and advance civic space in Ghana and beyond,”
— Vanessa Agyei-Essiful, WACSI
Participants wrapped up the training with peer reviews of their action plans and expressed interest in forming a community of practice to sustain momentum, foster collaboration, and promote continuous learning across the civic space ecosystem.

Moving Forward
As civic space in Ghana and West Africa continues to experience pressure from restrictive policies, limited funding, and internal governance gaps, the CSR-Hub’s leadership development approach stands out as a timely and strategic intervention.
With its Ghanaian cohort advancing into the next phase of capacity support, the CSR-Hub remains committed to empowering civil society actors with the tools, networks, and leadership capacities required to defend and expand democratic space in the region.
