SAFETY AND SECURITY: CHALLENGES OF JOURNALISTS IN THE CONFLICT-HIT NORTH-WEST AND SOUTH-WEST REGIONS OF CAMEROON
Since 2016, Cameroon’s North-West and South-West regions have been engulfed in conflict, as demands for autonomy from the English-speaking minority evolved into an armed struggle for independence, dubbed “Ambazonia.” Journalists in these areas face extreme risks, including violence, arbitrary detention, and censorship by both the government and separatist groups, which has severely restricted their capacity to report objectively. Despite the crucial role of the media in exposing human rights abuses and informing the public, the conflict remains one of the world’s most underreported. This report explores these journalists’ unique challenges and underscores the urgent need to safeguard press freedom and support journalists on the frontlines.
