Soaring in Life Through Internship Programmes: Ms. Nicole Hinshaw Lauds Internship Opportunity with WACSI
Meet Ms Nicole Hinshaw, an aspiring diplomat and Public Diplomacy Officer, a Junior at Arizona State University (ASU) studying Human Communication and Political Science who took up internship programmes in various fields in order to enrich her experience.
In 2017 Ms Hinshaw took up an internship in the Exchange Programmes at the U.S. Department of State Office of Citizen Exchanges where she worked on the TechWomen professional exchange programme. As part of the programme, she studied abroad in Ghana. She is appreciative of the opportunity and describes her internship experience as “beyond impactful”.
“My most memorable experience was in Ghana where I went on an ASU Faculty- Directed study at the University of Ghana and had the opportunity to intern at the West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI), an NGO that works to build the capacity of civil society organisations in West Africa”.
Ms Hinshaw worked in the Knowledge Management unit in the organisation and was responsible for compiling ‘Situation Reports’ that looked at violations of civic space in West African countries including Chad, Mauritania and Cameroon.
Sharing the gains she’s made from the programme with ASU’s communications team, she said,
“I came away from this experience more confident than ever in the career path I am pursuing. My interactions with participants, program officers, professors, and nonprofit leaders reinforced my love for this work and belief in its ability to craft a more compassionate and understanding world. The internship provided me with firsthand experience in the type of work I look to engage in after graduation and introduced me to new perspectives on my fields of interest as well as connected me to a network of inspiring public servants.”
Today, Ms Hinshaw is heavily involved in the international affairs community, works as a mentor to international students at ASU and most recently participated in the McCain Institute Policy Design Studio Program in Washington, D.C.
