The Fourth Estate of the Realm and the Third Sector: Building Synergy between Traditional Media and CSOs
| Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... |
Traditional media and civil society share a common mission to promote accountability and resist authoritarianism, yet tensions often arise between the two. The media’s increasing vulnerability to state influence, financial control, and profit motives has led to criticism from civil society for failing to uphold its watchdog role fully. On the other hand, the media sometimes perceives civil society organisations as self-serving, engaging journalists only to advance their organisational interests rather than the public good. This report examines these dynamics, drawing on studies like the Media Ownership Monitor Ghana and Civil Society Organisations and Traditional Media: Synergy Instead of Confrontation, to highlight opportunities for stronger collaboration in advancing shared civic goals.
