In 2026, the Pan-African Grand Finale of the ShiftingthePower Youth Debate at the Parliament of Ghana marked a powerful moment, one that clearly showed that young Africans are no longer waiting to be given space to lead.
They are already stepping into that space with confidence, clarity, and purpose. This was not just a debate; it was a strong signal that power is already shifting.
The Future is Now: Youth Voices and the Movement to Shift the Power
Participants from Malawi, Zambia, and Ghana brought forward bold ideas grounded in their lived realities. Beyond the debate itself, there was a strong sense of shared identity and connection. The spirit of Ubuntu was present, young people learning from one another, celebrating their cultures, and building a common vision for Africa’s future.
At the centre of the conversation was a simple but powerful truth: those closest to the problem are best placed to create solutions. The debates highlighted the importance of local ownership, where communities design and lead their own development efforts. This approach builds stronger, more sustainable systems because people take responsibility for what they create. Accountability was also redefined, not to distant donors, but to communities, families, and peers.
What stood out most was the depth of thinking. Young people were not only questioning existing systems but also proposing long-term solutions—focusing on governance, infrastructure, and economic independence. At the same time, they recognised that partnerships still matter, but these must be based on trust, respect, and local leadership rather than control.
Although Team Ghana won the final, the real achievement went far beyond the trophy. The event demonstrated that Africa’s youth are ready, not just to participate, but to lead and transform systems.
The message is clear, the future of Africa is not something to wait for. It is already being shaped by young people who are thinking boldly and acting with purpose. The real challenge now is whether institutions and leaders are ready to support this shift.
