Togo at a crossroad: Defending Democracy and Civic Freedom
| Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... |
Togo’s prolonged political crisis has deepened following constitutional reforms that have further concentrated power in the hands of President Faure Gnassingbé, who has governed since 2005 after succeeding his father, Gnassingbé Eyadéma, who ruled since 1967. The 2024 reforms have been widely criticised as a “constitutional coup,” while growing restrictions on journalists, civil society organisations, protests and digital freedoms signal a shrinking civic space.
This policy brief examines Togo’s democratic decline and calls for coordinated action by ECOWAS, West African civil society, Togolese civic actors and international development partners to promote dialogue, protect human rights, strengthen civic participation and support democratic renewal.
