[Accra, Ghana, 18 September 2026] –The West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI) Alumni Network has announced a new Executive Committee to lead from July 2026 to June 2028, with a mandate to strengthen engagement, advance youth development and support for WACSI’s work across the region.
The new Executive Committee is chaired by Dr Aicha Araba Etrew, with Carmelle Kabore serving as Vice Chair and Ruwadzano Makumbe as the Deputy Vice Chair. Other members are John Obuaba, Fundraising and External Relations Executive; Jee-hyea Grace Arkoi, Communication and Digital Media Executive; Emet Oluwafemi Sodjegbe Programmes Executive; and ThankGod Idamoko, Treasurer.
The new leadership will work to strengthen the connection between the Alumni Network and WACSI’s programmes, while identifying opportunities for alumni to contribute their expertise, experience and networks to the organisation and the wider region.
“While we firmly believe in supporting our network and helping everyone grow in their respective careers, we are equally committed to giving back to the region and our home countries,” Dr Etrew said.
WACSI Executive Director, Dr Nana Afadzinu, encouraged the Committee to support WACSI’s mission by contributing ideas, creativity, expertise and experience to help influence change across the region.
The transition also marks a significant step towards strengthening alumni representation within WACSI’s governance structures. Dr Afadzinu announced that WACSI’s Board has approved including the Chair of the Alumni Executive Committee as the network’s representative on the Board.
Building on 18 years of youth development
The Alumni Network builds on WACSI’s longstanding investment in developing emerging African leaders.
In 2008, WACSI launched its flagship Next Generation Internship Programme (NGIP), which provides young professionals with exposure to policy influencing, knowledge management and civic space, alongside training in leadership and research. To date, the programme has benefited 97 early-career professionals.
WACSI expanded this work in 2017 through its Research Fellowship Programme, which has strengthened the research and analytical capacities of 26 researchers across Africa. Forty-six more young professionals have engaged with WACSI through volunteering and academic internships, National Service placements, and the Emerging Public Leaders (EPL-Ghana) programme.
Together, these initiatives have helped contribute to a diverse alumni community, with members working across the public, private and civil society sectors in Africa and beyond.
“The Alumni Network should serve as a platform for maintaining connections and widening influence to make West Africa and the African continent what we want it to be,” Dr Afadzinu said.
During its two-year term, the new Executive Committee will focus on alumni engagement, youth leadership, professional development, collaboration and knowledge exchange, while ensuring that the network’s activities align with WACSI’s mission and vision.
As part of its next steps, the Alumni leadership will meet with WACSI’s Programmes Unit, establish regular engagement with WACSI’s Senior Management Team, and continue efforts to increase alumni participation and strengthen the network’s visibility.
