The West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI) is delighted to announce the appointment of Ambassador Francis Tsegah as the new Chairperson of its Governing Board. This milestone marks a significant step in WACSI’s ongoing commitment to strengthening civil society across West Africa.
Ambassador Francis Tsegah, WACSI’s new Board Chair
Ambassador Francis Tsegah, former Ambassador of the Republic of Ghana to the Kingdom of Spain, is the fifth board chair of the institute.
This news was shared with the management and staff of the institute on Tuesday, 18 November 2025, after a day-long board meeting. The meeting was the second statutory meeting taking place in 2025. It was climaxed by the decision to vote for Amb. Tsegah is at the helm of the institute.
Amb. Tsegah joined the board in 2022. He has diligently contributed to shaping the institute’s efforts to be a credible and reliable resource hub for civil society in the region.
Amb. Tsegah takes over from Mr Moussiliou Alidou, who has served on the board of WACSI since December 2019 and as board chair since 2023.
Amb. Tsegah, who takes over as board chair, confirmed that Mr Alidou’s void will be hard to fill, though he counts on board members and WACSI’s senior management team to work together to build on the outstanding gains of his predecessor.
With a distinguished career in diplomacy, regional integration, governance, development, and civil society leadership, Amb. Tsegah brings a wealth of experience and visionary leadership to the Institute. As Board Chair, he will guide WACSI’s strategic direction, ensuring that the organisation continues to champion democratic governance, civic participation, and inclusive development in the region.
Speaking on the appointment, WACSI’s Executive Director, Dr Nana Afadzinu, expresses confidence in the new leadership:
“As the resident Board member, Ambassador Tsegah has always been the first point of call for the Institute to follow up on any issues that needed the board’s intervention in Ghana, particularly. He has been very dependable and very responsive, going out of his comfort zone on some occasions to provide the needed support to the Executive Director and her team.
He has been a key part of several critical decisions on WACSI’s sustainability and progress. His appointment as the next board chair is a welcome development and very reassuring as WACSI moves on to its next level of growth and transformation.”
The board plays a critical role in shaping WACSI’s policies, ensuring their implementation and priorities. Under Amb. Tsegah’s stewardship, WACSI aims to deepen its impact through innovative capacity-building programmes, policy advocacy, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
Join us in congratulating Amb. Tsegah on this new role, as we look forward to a future of strengthened partnerships and transformative change for civil society in West Africa.
